Sporting Activities.

Scoil Padraig Naofa, Cregmore has a long and proud sporting tradition where we offer a wide range of sporting activities for all our pupils to participate in. Our emphasis is on pupil enjoyment, participation and being active with our peers. Sport is a wonderful median to inspire confidence, improving social interaction and to aid the healthy physical development of our children. Our staff here are involved in training and coaching classes from junior infants right up to the senior classes. Gaelic games, (Hurling,Football, Camogie), Soccer, Basketball, Olympic Handball, Athletics,Table Tennis and Rugby are among the main disciplines we participate in. Other activities that feature regularly in our school day in recent times are badminton, unihoc and rounders.

We are very fortunate to have very modern and suitable sporting facilities here in our school including a Sports Hall, a basketball court, a grass playing pitch and an Astro Turf pitch. We are in the process of constructing an outdoor running track which we believe will be of major benefit to our pupils.

Gaelic Games are very much part of school life here in Scoil Padraig Naofa, Cregmore. Our children are introduced to Gaelic Games from Rang 1. We are very fortunate that several staff members are keen GAA enthusiasts and weekly coaching is provided during lunch breaks, as part of our PE curriculum and after school. In addition Galway GAA send both Gaelic Football and Hurling coaches to our school for a few hours each week. We also work closely with our 2 local GAA Clubs, Turloughmore GAA Club and Claregalway GAA Club.

Table Tennis

Table tennis is a very beneficial sport as it offers great body-mind stimulation, aerobic exercise, hand-eye co-ordination and social interaction. Our children are very fortunate to have a range of table tennis equipment available in the school. In addition we collaborate with Table Tennis Ireland to avail of coaching services, which is an invaluable resource to the school.

Table Tennis has proven to be a very fun team sport in Scoil Pádraig Naofa. Each year, the senior classes participate in table tennis leagues wherer they learn to improve on their table tennis skills, including hand grip, standing position and footwork.

Basketball plays a central role in the sports life of Scoil Pádraig Naofa. Basketball training takes place weekly during which children from the senior classes learn an array of skills, including balance, dribbling, shooting and defending. It also affords the children the opportunity to experience success in an enjoyable and inclusive manner. A blitz is held in the school hall each year and many neighbouring schools attend to compete. We liaise with coaches from Basketball Ireland who assist with the running of this competition.
We are privileged to have both indoor and outdoor basketball courts in the school.

Olympic Handball

Olympic Handball is a relatively new sport here in Scoil Padraig Naofa, Cregmore. Training takes place each week and we participate in the Galway senior boys and girls competition annually.
